Heritage Coast
The Cardigan Bay coast between the Dyfi and Teifi estuaries contains a rich variety of coastline – dunes at Ynyslas, storm beaches, sandy bays and high cliffs. Some of the best coastal landscapes are designated as ‘Heritage Coast’.
2007 marked the 25th year of the Ceredigion Heritage Coast. Heritage Coasts cover
the finest stretches of undeveloped coast in Wales and England. The aim of
Heritage Coast management is to ensure their conservation and to promote access
and enjoyment.
The Ceredigion Heritage Coast covers 22 miles (35 km) of coastline in four sections:
- Borth - Clarach
- Monks Cave - Llanrhystud
- New Quay - Tresaith
- Pen-peles
- Gwbert
The section between New Quay and Tresaith was later established as a ‘Marine Heritage Coast’ – a community initiative aimed at conserving the area’s special marine wildlife, including the Bottlenose Dolphin. Since then, the local community and the County Council have been working in partnership to help conserve the special character of the Marine Heritage Coast. This voluntary initiative was the first of its kind in Britain.
